Stem cell transplantation whether the source of the cells is from cord blood or bone marrow is a standard medical procedure. An estimated 45,000-50,000 stem cell transplants are performed annually worldwide. As the treatments improve and options for stem cell sources expand this number will only continue to grow. Wharton's Jelly stem cells are currently used to help enhance both cord blood and bone marrow transplantation. The fetal mesenchymal stem cell found in the Wharton's Jelly supports the engraftment and growth of the hematopoietic stem cell that reconstitutes the immune system of the patient. Isolated mesenchymal stem cells similar to those found in Wharton's Jelly also been used to treat Graft vs Host disease in children with great success.
